We’ll help you separate the facts from the fiction.
MYTH – It’s OK to skip breakfast
Your body probably won’t have had nourishment for 12 hours, so definitely not. Even just a simple breakfast of cereal or toast can provide lots of vitamins and minerals. Miss breakfast, and you might end up snacking on foods that are high in sugar and fat.
FACT – Most of our salt intake comes from processed food
By far the most salt in our diet comes from processed food and not from the salt that we add at the table. Check the labels on your foods when you are out shopping.
MYTH – Dried fruit isn’t as healthy as fresh fruit
Another whopper. Dried fruit like raisins and dates all count towards your 5 a day. They also boost your energy levels and contain fibre, vitamins and minerals. Remember to scrub those pearly whites after though.
FACT – Frozen is as good for you as fresh
Frozen fruit and veg are frozen within hours of being picked, so they retain their vitamins.
MYTH – Bread and potatoes are fattening
Starchy foods like bread, potatoes, rice and pasta are a really important part of a healthy diet – and they keep you full for longer. It’s only when we add fat to them (like oil and butter) that they become fattening.
